From The Road
This section covers emails, forum posts or any other updates I might have made from the road. I can’t remember all the details from my trips so I thought I would add a section with some of the more interesting posts. Most of these are from thesamba.com
Mexico City
Mexico City is big, very big. It’s also polluted and busy and crowded and, at times, dangerous. That’s not to say it should be overlooked though. With your wits about you and some care you can still see some of the wonderful sites and museums that this megalopolis has to offer. Continue reading “Mexico City” »
Mexico: San Blas on the Pacific Coast
San Blas, located a few hours south of Mazatlan or a few hours north of Puerto Vallarta, is a quiet, seaside fishing community with affordable accommodation, a quiet zocalo and a beach with waves large enough to surf. The atmosphere is very friendly with locals smiling and waving or just walking up and sitting next to you on a park bench. I would have to say that I received more smiles in San Blas than any of the other towns and cities that I had visited. Continue reading “Mexico: San Blas on the Pacific Coast” »
Northern Mexico: Creel and the Copper Canyon
A couple of hours west of Chihuahua in Northern Mexico is the Copper Canyon or, Barrance del Cobre, as it is known in Spanish. This canyon rivals Ameria’s Grand Canyon in that it is 3 times the size and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The canyon is also home to the Tarahumara indians, the name deriving from “rahumara” or foot runners. Continue reading “Northern Mexico: Creel and the Copper Canyon” »
Northern Mexico: Chihuahua
Northern Mexico, with the exception of overnight drunken binges into Tijuana by underage college students, is often overlooked in favour of the beaches and jungles of southern Mexico. For the somewhat adventurous traveler there is still plenty to see and do, especially if your interests include hiking and history. The city of Chihuahua offers plenty to see and do if you have a couple of days. Continue reading “Northern Mexico: Chihuahua” »
I Killed My Engine! Doh!
Hey all. Sorry for not keeping in touch. Been having a busy summer, without my bus. As some of you know I was driving it from Northern Alberta to Vancouver when it crapped out on a hill just south of Kamloops. Well the mechanics took the engine apart and this is what they sent me: Continue reading “I Killed My Engine! Doh!” »
The Trip Home – California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Montana
Well I’m back home again and by home I mean Canada. I had left Vancouver BC but didn’t want to return there so I came to Calgary where I’ve got a friend that I’m staying with. The trip home was an interesting one. I left Slab City by the Salton Sea on a Monday and was going to try to get to Vegas the same day. I took a short cut through Joshua Tree Park and while I was supposed to pay I didn’t bother because I was only passing through and didn’t see the sense in coughing up $20 in order to shave an hour off of my route. Good thing I didn’t get caught. I guess they don’t take kindly to that short of thing as there were some other people pulled over by park rangers on the side of the road looking very guilty and I doubt they were smuggling dope from Cali into Nevada. The Fuzz, Slab City and Northward Bound
I was driving down HWY 94 the other day when I found this great little pullout overlooking some ranches and farm houses so I decided to pull in and spend the day and maybe even boondock overnight. I hung around the area for the day washing some clothes, dishes, cleaning out the bus and working on the laptop. I actually picked up a wireless signal as well from somewhere in the valley which, while being weak, allowed me to take care of some online business. It was really a great little spot. More amazing coincidences and VW hospitality!
The other day I was in San Felipe Mexico on the Baja and had to head back to the U.S. to ship a camera to someone in Washington DC. No big deal, a few hours drive, very nice ride through the desert and I would have been back in San Felipe within the day.
I’m pulling into the U.S. customs lineup when I see a black 1961 bug heading towards me. Cool but not overly uncommon in Mexico except that the dude flipped me the peace sign. So I pulled into the line behind him and after about 5 minutes he walks back to me bus and says, “You’re wanderglobe aren’t you?” Continue reading “More amazing coincidences and VW hospitality!” »
San Diego Bus Run
Hey guys,
Well I’ve had a wonderful time in the U.S. and now I have to start editing these DVD’s or haul my ass back to Canada to work some more and hit the road again. Who knows which way I’ll roll.
My last day in the U.S. was spent with John and Alex in San Diego. We all hooked up the night before, had a few pops and then went for a ride and BBQ the next day. Talk about coincidences, check this out; Continue reading “San Diego Bus Run” »
Kudos to the VW Community
Hey everyone,
So as some of you know I’ve been tooling around the U.S. in my bus and I just finished a 2 week jaunt down the Baja and back. The bus hasn’t been running up to snuff and so I put out a request for a place to work on the bus in the San Diego area and it was answered by a number of people. I popped over to see John (volksterii) as he had Monday and Tuesday off and was prepared to learn some of the ropes of a basic tuneup. Continue reading “Kudos to the VW Community” »
